Alta Langa is the most southern area of the Langhe, where, due to the higher elevation of the hills, the cultivation of grapes gives way to hazelnut trees, woods, and pastures. Enchanting views encompass hillsides dappled with small medieval villages and are characterized by the warm colours of the Langhe and the scent of sea air blowing in from nearby Liguria. Framed by the crescent of the Alps and dominating the valleys with their towers and castle forts as a testament to medieval tradition, these towns have preserved their ancient traditions and ways of life. Even now they maintain the characteristics of a rural society despite being located in the middle of one of the most industrialized areas in Europe. In fact, the geomorphological characteristics make this a rather hard-to-reach area, leading the towns to consolidate their references within the local communities and develop a highly self-sufficient economic organization. At the same time, however, frequent contact with distant populations and the historical succession of administrative and political structures have helped to shape its profoundly resourceful and creative character, free spiritedness, and unique love of storytelling that is based on fantasy and magic, as can be seen in the oral traditions which are to this day passed down from generation to generation.
